Parents and Students of Gibson County Special School District,
As you are aware, Governor Bill Lee recommended that schools close for the remainder of the 2019-2020 academic year due to the continuous spread of COVID-19. Gibson County Special School District will follow this recommendation.
The district will continue with distance learning until May 1, 2020. At that point, any student who is failing a course may continue to work with the teacher of that course to bring his/her grade up to passing. The deadline for those students to complete and submit all work will be May 15, 2020. There will be some exceptions at the high school level for students who are enrolled in Dual Credit, Statewide Dual Credit, and/or Advanced Placement courses or students who are completing Industry Certifications. After May 1, the district will provide supplemental materials for parents/students if they want to continue the learning process while we aren’t in the building. These learning opportunities are not required, but they could help reduce any learning gaps that may occur with the extended time away from the school building.
We will continue serving meals at our school locations on Mondays and Thursdays. The serving locations are at Dyer, Kenton, Rutherford, SGCES, Spring Hill, and Yorkville. The meals are free to anyone under the age of 18. May 18, 2020, will be the final day for meals to be served.
In the near future, we will be providing additional information about activities necessary for closing out the school year, such as turning in books and cleaning out lockers. Of course, we will utilize CDC guidelines and follow state and local recommendations as we carry out those procedures to ensure the safety of our community and staff.
I am sorry that we are having to make adjustments and that so many important life events are being disrupted. I realize that these changes cause stress and anxiety and that the lack of control in these circumstances increases those feelings. However, I want you to know that the staff at GCSSD care for you and your children, and we will get through this together.
